Vastu Shastra

What is Vastu Shastra?
Vastu Shastra is an ancient Indian architectural and design tradition that provides principles for planning and arranging homes, buildings, rooms, and other spaces. The word Vastu broadly refers to a dwelling or place, while Shastra means a system of knowledge or teachings.
Vastu Shastra traditionally considers factors such as direction, layout, space, sunlight, ventilation, and the five elements of nature—Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space—to guide the design of a balanced living environment.
Main principles of Vastu Shastra
The traditional system places importance on:
Directions – North, South, East, West and the intermediate directions.
Five elements (Panchabhuta) – Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space.
Room placement – Traditional guidelines associate different activities and rooms with particular areas of a building.
Natural light and ventilation – Good access to sunlight and fresh air is an important practical consideration.
Spatial balance – The arrangement of spaces is intended to create harmony within a building.
Why is Vastu Shastra followed?
Many people in India use Vastu principles when buying land, designing a house, planning rooms, or arranging interiors. It is primarily a traditional cultural and architectural practice. Claims that Vastu directly guarantees wealth, health, success, or other outcomes are belief-based rather than scientifically established.
In simple words: Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian system of architectural planning that aims to create a harmonious relationship between a building, its occupants, and the surrounding environment.
