Classification of Preposition. 

পদান্বয়ী অব্যয়

যে word noun বা pronoun এর পরে বসে তাদের মধ্যে একটি সম্পর্ক স্থাপন করে তাকে preposition বলে।[Preposition is a word that is placed before a noun or pronoun to show its relationship with another word in a sentence or clause.]

বাংলা ব্যাকরণে যেমন বিভিন্ন কারক আছে এবং যার দ্বারা ক্রিয়ার সঙ্গে অন্য পদের সম্বন্ধ বোঝানো হয়। ইংরাজীতেও তেমনি বহু preposition আছে যা বাংলা বিভক্তির কাজ করে। যেমন–

করণ (দিয়ে, দ্বারা, কর্তৃক)		Ravan was killed by Ram.
		রাবণ রাম কর্তৃক নিহত হয়েছিল।
		Pencil, I cut with the knife.
		আমি ছুরি দিয়ে পেনসিল কাটি।
সম্প্রদান/নিমিত্ত(কে, জন্য)	to, for	Give food to the poor.
		দরিদ্রকে অন্ন দাও।
		I did this for you.
		আমি তোমার জন্য এটি করলাম।
অপাদান (চেয়ে, থেকে, হতে)	from/than	The fruit fell from the tree.
		গাছ থেকে ফল পড়ে।
		Rina is younger than Mina.
		রীনা মীনার চেয়ে ছোট।
সম্বন্ধ (র, এর)	Of	The legs of a chair.
		চেয়ারের পা।
অধিকরণে (এ, তে, য়)	at/in	He lives at Subhaspally.
		সে সুভাষপল্লীতে বাস করে।
		There is no fish in the market
		বাজারে কোন মাছ নেই।

        

Position of Preposition

 

সাধারণত preposition গুলি noun বা pronoun এর আগে বসে।

যেমন– গীতা মিতাকে একটি কলম দিয়েছিল। – Gita gave a pen to Mita.

বাঘটি হরিণের উপর লাফিয়ে পড়ল। The tiger jumped on the deer.

আমি ঐ ছেলেটির বিষয় কিছুই জানিনা। I know nothing about that boy.

যদি Interrogative pronoun অথবা relative pronoun preposition এর object হয়, তাহলে কিন্তু preposition শেষে বসবে।

যেমন– এখানে যে চেয়ারটি আছে তার পরে তুমি বসতে পার। – Here is a chair to sit on.

তুমি কী চাইছ? – What are you want for ?

তুমি কোথা থেকে আসছো ?– Where do you come from?

Classification of Preposition

Preposition –এর শ্রেণিবিভাগ

Preposition গুলিকে প্রধানত ছভাগে ভাগ করা হয়ে থাকে। যেমন–

1. Simple Preposition 2. Double Preposition 3. Compound Preposition 4. Phrase Preposition 5. Participle Preposition 6. Disguised Preposition

1. Simple Preposition

.

Rabin will arrive at 9 a.m. – রবীন ন টার সময় পৌছাবে।

Meghnadbodh was written by Madhusudan. – মধুসূদন কতৃক মেঘনাথ বধ রচিত হয়েছিল।

My brother will come from Delhi tomorrow. – আমার ভাই আগামী কাল দিল্লী থেকে আসবে।

Will you go with me for market? – তুমি কি আমার সঙ্গে বাজারে যাবে?

I left after Rabi had come. – আমি রবি আসার পরই চলে গিয়েছিলাম।

Note: উপরের sentence গুলিতে at, by, from, with, after ইত্যাদি পদগুলিকে simple preposition বলে। কারণ এরা এক পদ বিশিষ্ট । অনুরূপ in, on, through, over, for, under প্রভৃতি  preposition গুলিও simple preposition.

2. Double preposition

.

অনেক সময় একটিমাত্র preposition or simple preposition দ্বারা বক্তব্য পরিষ্কার করে বোঝানো সম্ভব হয় না, সেক্ষেত্রে একাধিক preposition ব্যবহার করতে হয়।

যেমন– Rama come from with in the house. – রমা বাড়ির ভিতর থেকে এল

The seed has sprouted from under the ground. – মাটির নীচে থেকে বেরিয়েছে।

He ran into the house. – সে বাড়ির ভিতর ছুটে গেল।

Note: বাক্যগুলিতে প্রত্যেকটিতে বক্তব্য স্পষ্ট করতে দুটি করে preposition বসানো হয়েছে। অনুরূপভাবে on to, from among, from off, from under প্রভৃতি double preposition গুলি ব্যবহৃত হয়ে থাকে।

3. Compound preposition

.

একের বেশি preposition এর সমন্বয়ে যদি সম্পূর্ণ ভিন্ন একটি preposition গঠিত হয় তবে তাকে compound preposition বলে। যেমন

1. There is no body within the class. – শ্রেণিকক্ষে কেউ নেই।

2. There can be no success without hard work. – কঠোর পরিশ্রম ছাড়া সাফল্য আসে না।

অনূরুপভাবে across (on + cross), along (on + long) behind (by+hind), beside (by + side) etc.

আরও কিছু common preposition এর ব্যবহার

.

সে আমার পেছনে চলল – He walked behind me.

সে গাছের পেছনে লুকোলো– He hid behind tree.

মেঘের আড়ালে সূর্য হাসে– The sun shines behind the cloud.

ট্রেনটি দেরীতে চলছে – The train is running behind time.

ক্রিকেট ছাড়াও তিনি টেনিস খেলেন। Besides cricket he plays tennis also.

আমি ছাড়াও সেখানে আরও তিনজন যাত্রী ছিল। Besides I there were three other passengers there.

প্রথম ও দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের মাঝে হিটলার ক্ষমতায় আসেন। – Hitler came to power in the period between the First and the Second World War.

বাংলাদেশ ত্রিপুরা ও পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মাঝে অবস্থিত। Bangladesh is situated between Tripura and West Bengal.

মৃত্যুর পরে কি আছে তা কেউ জানে না– Nobody knows what lies beyond death.

নদীর অপর পারে গ্রামটি অবস্থিত– The village is situated beyond the river.

সত্যি ছাড়া আমি অন্য কিছু বিশ্বাস করব না– I shall believe nothing but the truth. পৈত্রিক সম্পত্তি আমাদের জীবনে অশান্তি ছাড়া কিছু আনেনি – Paternal property brought us nothing but trouble.

মেয়েটি বাবার মত হয়েছে। – The daughter has taken after her father.

কারণের পর কার্য আছে। – The effect comes after the cause.

কাশি আমার নিচের ক্লাশে পড়ত– Kashi was below me in school.

তার ডান চোখের নিচে একটি কাটা আছে – There is a cut mark below his right eye.

আমি শার্টের নিচে গেঞ্জি পরি – I put on a vest beneath the shirt.

আমরা গাছের তলায় বসেছিলাম – We sat beneath the tree.

আমার পাশে দাঁড়াও। – Stand beside me.

শরৎচন্দ্রের তুলনায় অন্য অনেক ঔপন্যাসিক গল্পলেখক মাত্র। Beside Sharat Chandra many other novelists are mere story writer.

ব্যক্তিগতভাবে তোমার বিরুদ্ধে আমার কিছু বলার নেই– I have nothing to say

against you personally.

রুবি দেওয়ালে হেলান দিয়েছিল – Rubi leaned against the wall.

অসময়ের জন্য সঞ্চয় করা উচিত – You should save against the sad day.

4. Phrase Preposition

যখন শব্দ গুচ্ছের সঙ্গে preposition যুক্ত হয়ে একটি বিশেষ অর্থ প্রকাশ করে তখন তাকে phrase preposition বলে। যেমন

পরিশ্রমের দ্বারা শোভন সাফলা গেল – Shovan succeeded by means of hard work.

সে বিজ্ঞানের পরিবর্তে ভাষা সাহিত্য নিয়েছে – He has selected arts instead of

science.

তুমি পদকের পরিবর্তে বই পাবে– You will get books in lieu of the medal.

5. Participle Preposition

কতকগুলি preposition present participle ও past participle এর মত ব্যবহৃত হয়ে থাকে এদের বলে participle preposition যেমন–

১) কোন দুর্ঘটনা না ঘটলে ট্রেন ঠিক সময়ে পৌঁছাবে – Barring accidents the train will arrive in time.

২) এ ব্যাপারে আমি কিছুই করতে পারি না – Regarding this case I can do nothing.

৩) গ্রামের পাশ দিয়ে রেল লাইন গিয়েছে। The railway line runs past the village.

6. Disguised Preposition

কোন কোন সময় a এবং o, on এবং of এর পরিবর্তে হয়ে থাকে এদের disguised preposition বলে। যেমন–

সে মাসে একবার সেখানে যায়। He goes there once a month.

এখন চারটে বেজেছে। It is four o’clock (of) now.

কুড়ি টাকায় এক কিলো চাল বিক্রি হচ্ছে। Rice is selling one kilo (for ) a rupee.

Some words used as preposition and adverb

.

Around

Preposition: তারা আমার বাড়ির কাছেই ঘুরছে। They are moving around my house.

Adverb: The ice was all around.

About

Preposition : I know nothing about Sima. আমি সীমার বিষয়ে কিছুই জানি না।

Adverb : বাবা আমার বিয়েতে প্রায় এক লক্ষ টাকা খরচ করেছিলেন। My father spent about one lac in my marriage.

Before

Preposition:আমি বারোটার আগে আসবো না। – I shall not come before twelve.

Adverb: সে কি সকালে এসেছে ? না আগে ? Did he come in the morning? No, he came before.

In

Preposition :তিনি কি আফিসে আছেন ? Is he in the office?

Adverb: আপনি ভিতরে যেতে পারেন। You may go in.

On

Preposition: গ্লাসটি থালার উপর। The glass is on the plate.

Adverb: চল, ফেরা যাক । Let us move on.

Since

Preposition: বিনি তার মাকে গতকাল থেকে দেখেনি– Bini has not seen her mother since yesterday.

Adverb: আমি তাকে সোমবার দেখেছি, তারপর থেকে আর দেখিনি – I saw him on monday, I have not seen him since.

After

Preposition:আমি তিন মাস পড়ে ফিরলাম – I returned after three months.

Adverb: তার ভাই শীঘ্রই তার পরে ফিরে এলেন-His brother came soon after.

Off

Preposition: তিনি গাছ থেকে লাফলেন– He jumped off the tree.

Adverb:দরজাটা খুলে গেল – The door open off.

Behind

Preposition: চোরটি পেছনের দরজা দিয়ে বেরিয়ে গেল – The thief ran away behind the door.

Adverb: মা ছেলেটিকে ফেলে চলে গেলেন – Mother left the boy behind.

Over

Preposition: অশোক বিশাল সাম্রাজাকে শাসন করেছিলেন Ashok ruled over a vast empire.

Adverb: এই বইগুলি বাড়িতে নিয়ে যাও– These book took over to the house.

Down

Preposition:নৌকাটি নদীতে ডুবে গেল – The boat sailed down the river.

Adverb:তিনি নীচে নেমে এলেন – He came down.

Around

Preposition: পৃথিবী সূর্যের চারদিকে ঘোরে– The earth moves round the sun.

Adverb: আমি ঘুরে দাড়ালাম – I turned round.

Through

Preposition: এই রাস্তাটি বাড়ির ভিতর দিয়ে গিয়েছে– This road goes through the house.

Adverb: বইটি আমি সম্পূর্ণ পড়েছি – I have read the book through.

Without

Preposition: বাতাস ছাড়া আমরা বাঁচতে পারি না – We can not live without air.

Adverb:বাইরে ঝর বইছে -The storm is going without.
