Verbal Noun
আমি উপন্যাস পড়তে ভালবাসি। I like the reading of novel.
ভালো কবিতা লেখা সহজ নয়। The writing of good poetry is not easy.
আমি উত্তম কুমারের অভিনয় পছন্দ করি। I am fond of the acting of Uttam Kumar.
Note. 1. উপরের sentence –এর প্রত্যেকটিতে verb এর পরে ing যোগ করে বাক্যটিকে সম্পূর্ণ করা হয়েছে।
2. verbal noun –এর আগে the এবং পরে of ব্যবহার করা হয়।
3. verbal noun কোন বিশেষ জিনিসকে বোঝাতে চায় বলে তার আগে the বসে।
যেমন– The reading of novel বলতে বিশেষ করে উপন্যাস পড়নোকে বোঝানো হয়েছে তাই তার আগে the বসেছে। আবার the acting of Uttam Kumar যখন বলা হয়েছে তখন বিশেষ একজন অভিনেতাকে চিহ্নিত করা হয়েছে।
Gerund (verb + ing)
দোষ ধরা খারাপ অভ্যাস। Finding fault is a bad habit.
সাঁতার কাটা ভালো ব্যায়াম। Swimming is a good exercise.
অতিরিক্ত ঘুম স্বাস্থ্যের পক্ষে হানিকর। Too much sleeping is injurious to health.
চিঠি লেখা অতীতের ব্যাপার হয়ে গিয়েছে। Writing letters has become a matter of the past.
Note. যখন কোনো verb –এর পরে ing বসিয়ে noun –এর কতকগুলি বৈশিষ্ট্য বা features দেওয়া হয় তখন তাকে Gerund বলে।
যে কোনো noun এর মত gerund কে ব্যবহার করা যায়। যেমন– Writing a poetry is a noble act. – কবিতা লেখা এক মহৎ প্রয়াস।
I like reading poetry. আমি কবিতা পড়তে ভালোবাসি।
I am fond of listening Tagore songs. আমি রবীন্দ্রসঙ্গীত শুনতে ভালোবাসি।
Verbal noun ও gerund এর মধ্যে পার্থক্য

Verbal noun ও gerund দুইই verb এর সঙ্গে ing যোগ করে বাক্য গঠন করা হয়। কিন্তু সব verbal noun ই gerund নয়। কিন্তু সমস্ত gerund ই verbal noun.
Verbal noun verb থেকে তৈরী হলেও এতে কেবল noun এর বৈশিষ্ট্য থাকে কিন্তু gerund এ noun ও verb উভয়েই বৈশিষ্ট্য বর্তমান থাকে তাই তাকে double part of speech ও বলে।
Gerund এর ব্যবহার
Noun এর মত gerund কোনও বাক্যের subject কোন transitive verb বা preposition এর objective বা কোন verb incomplete predication এবং complement রূপ ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে। যেমন–
1. Subject of a verb
Walking is a good exercise. ভ্রমণ উত্তম ব্যায়াম।
Buying books is my only luxury. বই কেনাই আমার একমাত্র বাবুগিরি।
Object of a verb
I like reading novels. আমি উপন্যাস পড়তে ভালোবাসি।
I prefer riding to walking. – আমি ভ্রমনের চেয়ে ঘোড়ায় চড়তে ভালোবাসি।
Complement of Verb
He is addicted to smoking. –সে ধুমপানে অভ্যস্ত।
He is proficient in doing sums. – সে অঙ্ক কষতে পারদর্শী।
Gerund and Infinitive
Gerund এবং Infinitive উভয়েই noun এবং verb এর শক্তি আছে। তাই তাদের ব্যবহারই প্রায় একই রকম হয়ে থাকে। যেমন–
Infinitive Gerund
To swim is good for health. Swimming is good for health.
He likes to play football. He likes playing football.
Tomatoes are good for eat. Tomatoes are good for eating
